What’s your ideal client profile?

There’s been a lot of discussion in my networking circles lately about who is your ideal client. I thought I’d extend the question to all of you. After all, it’s important to know when you’re writing your content for your website.

Many people think when they’re doing a new website that it’s all about them. It’s not. You and your business come way down the list. First you need to answer the visitor’s question “what’s in it for me?”. Yes, people will want to check your About page, but before getting there they’ve typed in some keywords that brought them to your site. After that they’re going to check and see if your services or products are what they’re looking for. Once you’ve passed those requirements, then they’ll check you out.

So who is your ideal client?

What are their demographics?
  • Geography: do you work with people around the world, in the US, or locally?
  • Industry: what industry are you passionate about working with?
  • Company size: are small companies best for you or large corporations?
  • Generation: are your best customers Millennials or Baby Boomers?

What are their needs?

Within those demographics you’ll find a wide range of potential customers ranging from start-ups to corporations or non-profits that have been around for ages. Which ones could you serve best?

Here’s my ideal client profile:
  • I work with small businesses (5-50 people) throughout the US.
  • I don’t do e-commerce.
  • I prefer working with industries that I’m passionate about:
    • Many of my family members are in the building trades so I focus there.
    • I ran a small association for 11 years and have lots of experience in that area.
    • I’m an avid kayaker and love working with nature conservancies.
  • I prefer to work with companies who have done a DIY site and maybe even hired someone to do their next site. Now they realize they need something that works.
