Did You Know Not All Links are Created Equal?
Did you know there is a free way to increase your Google PageRank? And just what is PageRank and why do we care about it? PageRank is Google’s way of ranking importance of a particular page. That rank is used to determine which pages will come up when someone does a search. And why do we always talk only about Google? Because as of September 2012 they have 86% of the market. That’s enough to make me focus how to get on Google’s Page One.
So … back to the free way to increase your PageRank. Link Popularity (aka the number of links coming in to your website) is a huge part of how Google determines your rank. Links from trusted, popular sites that have a high PageRank like Yelp, Manta, and Merchant’s Circle give you more “points” for your PageRank.
In addition to the generic directories like the ones listed above you can get yourself listed in Trade Organization and Specialized Directories. Since these sites are deemed relevant to your site they too earn more “points” towards your Page Rank.
Reciprocal Links (links you exchange with a referral partner for example) aren’t rated as high as a site with a high PageRank or a trade directory but still add some “points” to your PageRank.
Although you will see very few hits come directly from these links Search Engines use these directories as referral systems. Submissions that are manually done are subjected to a higher level of scrutiny, which isn’t done with those software assisted submission sites. When your listing is approved and entered in the directory the search engines consider it a validation and attach more value to it than one that was submitted by an automated submission.
